About Us

Direct Health Care Innovations

The NHS is challenged to deliver modern effective healthcare in an age of severe financial constraints, an escalating digital media awareness and increasing public expectations.
Over the years DHC Innovations have provided clinical healthcare delivery and transformation of IT related solutions by working with patients, carers, NHS professionals and fellow believers in innovation.
DHC Innovations’ current project is the creation a brand new, first of its kind product, called the Optishield.
The Optishield was developed from personal experience and working in collaboration with the Universities of Keele and Wolverhampton. The project went through several design processes, including CAD and 3D printing.
Aston University School of Optometry and the Medical Devices Testing and Evaluation Centre (MD-TEC) undertook a usability study, the results of which found a very high level of acceptance among optometrists. The study identified a 100% completion success rate, with the highly experienced participants perceiving the device as a helpful aid to enable hand-free working, resulting in a direct positive impact on their usual clinical practice.
The Optishield offers a hands-free alternative for optometrists when testing visual acuity. It is reusable and easy to clean.
Our experience as healthcare professionals and patient representatives enable us to work closely with customers and prospective systems suppliers to provide advice and assurance of the needs of the client and the delivery of working solutions.

About Us

With a long career in a clinical role in the NHS, Rebecca was fortunate enough to work alongside an incredibly inspirational, focused and driven workforce. During her career she has had extensive direct contact with patients which required skills and empathy with those suffering from a long-term medical condition. As an independent clinical reporter, she gained considerable experience in remaining focused to the best outcome for the patient. Having found the absence of a device to aid problems with diplopia, DHC Innovations  decided to launch into the world of product design with the innovative Optishield.

With the help and facilitation of some forward-thinking local universities and business organisation schemes, DHC Innovations have been able to bring the unique device, the Optishield, into fruition. As a medical device, collaborations with Keele University, the University of Wolverhampton and the Medical Devices Testing and Evaluation Centre in Birmingham have proved invaluable. Of particular importance on this journey has been gaining extensive experience in regulatory, intellectual property and healthcare market requirements.

Following conversations with the sport and para-sport groups that use occlusion to improve sport vision performance, DHC Innovations are now looking to produce a version of the Optishield more suited for use during active sports. This will require further prototypes and tooling design, but hopefully this market diversification will be achieved, and the original product will pivot from a clinical medical device to a sports vision aid, opening new markets both in UK and Internationally. The innovation for the new product is the ease of use, and environmental impact considerations, compared to similar products in both clinical and sports settings.

Looking forward, the Optishield has attracted worldwide interest, with potential markets rapidly expanding. The company has a strong sense of connection with sight charities, with a profit share agreement with Beacon Vision, and a primary ethos of offering support to those using this device. This project was born of need, but its success rests on the collaboration, practical advice and entrepreneurial support that has been so graciously offered by several academic, charitable, and innovative business organisations.

This project has given DHC Innovations a greater insight into understanding product marketing and its associated disciplines.   ——-

DHC Innovations and the Optishield are multiple award winners, receiving the Beacon Visionary Challenge Winner award in 2017, and the Outstanding Achievement Award for the Medilink Medical Healthcare Business Awards in 2019.
